The AA Visiting School is a worldwide network of design workshops and other programmes organised by the Architectural Association School of Architecture. The event will take place in Bilbao from July 22nd to July 31st, focusing on new lectures over territory.
We have two scholarships for our readers interested on this activity, you need to send us your CV and statement explaining why you would like to participate in this event. For more details read below.
The workshop explores the question of ‘place’ or ‘topos’ and its radical transformation in the recent years due to the proliferation and availability of environmental parameters. Departing from the notion of ‘computing,’ understood as information processing, strategies of ‘data mining’ and ‘indexing’ are proposed as sensible readings of the site and the territory. We aim at bringing together design strategies and the critical utilisation of both local and global, material and virtual, visible and invisible information of the place. To build upon new operational platforms of environmental readings, the proposals are grounded on the diagram and the indexing, as opposed to dissociated parametric strategies.
As a means to investigate new design processes and produce context sensitive environments from a critical perspective, local ‘materials’ such as user behaviour, social patterns or environmental analysis informed the design process through data-feed protocols, environmental simulation software and algorithmic design. These variables intertwined with a common programmatic allocation: productive spaces to attract new companies inserted in the urban tissues to propose alternatives to the 1980s peripheral, technological parks.
